GoJo Gym athletes preparing for World Championships in the ring and on the mat. (One Magazine)

Two programs running out of GoJo Gym, The Sherbrook Street Boxing Club and Team 64 Jiu Jitsu, both have a large number of athletes competing and achieving success.
The Sherbrook Street Boxing Club coached by Ken Johnson, is taking 12 fighters to the 10th Annual Ringside World Championships August 2nd to the 7th. I asked Ken Johnson about his thoughts on his crew over the past year and he said,“The gym is getting pretty hot. There's scouts in the crowd looking for the next good pro,” One of those guys is Kyle Oliveria. This 18 year old is no stranger to the gym already having a blue belt in jiu jitsu and was also a provincial wrestling champion. “Boxing at 140 pounds, Kyle has speed and hurts people, he’s had 8 fights in 3 months racking up a 7-1 record with 4 referee stoppages”, In his last bout at an amateur card held at GoJo, Kyle stopped Bret King in the 3rd round.
Another fighter who has been hot lately is Reece Settee. “‘The Beast’ is fighting everybody and anybody, he’s been the gym’s top dog fighting a lot of main events. He is 4-2 as an open boxer and doing exceptionally well. Twin brother Brian Settee is working hard and ready to go. travelling but not getting bouts. Donavon Thomas, Peguis, same thing, fighting hard, not getting any breaks on decisions”.
Ken Johnson also has a couple young guys preparing for the February 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax. Both fighters are fresh off wins at GoJo's last card. Taylor “Dr. Hook” Gillespie is a 16 year old heavyweight who fought 3 bouts in 3 weekends back in March. Vlad Domozhyrov, “one of the teams hardest workers, like a Russian machine, coming along.”
All boxers will head to Kansas City.

Undefeated amatuer boxer Christina Barry, is also a purple belt instructor at GoJo Gym, she won the Abu Dhabi Pro Canadian Championships, June 12th, 13th at an MMA Expo in Toronto, Ontario. Christina won a gold medal in the 63 kg division. She defeated 7 opponents, “two chokes, the rest won in points, beat purple belts from Quebec, Ontario and New York”. Christina said of her win. She is preparing for the Abu Dhabi Pro Canadian qualifiers in Montreal March, 2011, to qualify for Abu Dhabi World Championships. Christina is looking to come back a world champion from the Kansas City Ringside Boxing tournament as well.
The Submission Cup was held at Windsor Park Colligiate June 19th and two members of Team 64 Franco Behring Jiu Jitsu were double gold winners. Sebastian Jagnyziek, 18, won Gi and No Gi, 235 pounds.
Jason Russel, aka “The Rupness Monster” won in Gi and No Gi as well.
Team 64 instructor Garry Sawatzky recently received his black belt in Toronto May 8th-10th. Under the discretion of the Franco Behring Jiu Jitsu Alliance, Christina said, “Garry did two days of grading including teaching a class, performing entire progressive system flawlessly under 5 plus black belts from Canada and Brazil. Finished testing by then taking on the other black belts back to back." Sawatzky is also a seven season CFL veteran.
