Boneyard Sports

You might remember me from such films as, Battle of the Hockey Enforcers (2005) , and youtube fight videos, I'm your sports writer, but im also your hired muscle for the River Cree Warriors now,  members of Alberta Chinook Senior Hockey League. River Cree Warriors play out of the war memorial arena on Enoch First Nation as well as the River Cree Resort and Casino twin rinks complex. The team is in 3rd place. I am 2nd in league pelanty minutes to teammate Ashlee Langdon. I been in three fights and won them all by my count, with the fans booing me out of town seconding it. As for putting up points, a shot from the point hit me and went in, and I must have touched the puck on another for 2 points on the season in 8 games with109 pelanty minutes. Im still in the gym training and in school, picking my hockey fight schedule and training times, after 10 years hockey averaging 30 fights a year, its a nice pace. I been a sparring partner the past couple weeks for Kareem Chartrand from Gimili, Manitoba. Me and Kareem were teammates our rookie season's in the manitoba junior hockey league playing and enforcing for the South East Blades. Chris Fontaine was also on the same team and i am happy to see them pursuing profesional fighting careers and will cover thier fights. Kareem will be fighting in Edmonton on January 24th for the WBA Cruiserweight World Championship against Ryan Henney at the Shaw Center in Edmonton, Alberta. Kareem has been in GoJo Gym, training for his title shot,  we have been slugging it out for couple weeks fighting for the GoJo Gym championship, 20 rounds in total in preperation for this fight. i will also be in edmonton playing with river cree and will be attending and supporting Kareem as I was the lone sparring partner this camp,  Joe Soares and Chad Brisson were doing the training and coaching. Kareem also did alot of conditioning drills that have become common place in the GoJo Gym these days. Gord Whitney has done alot for the gym and its fighters by bringing many different conditioning drills for speed, endurance and power. Chris Fontaine is also fighting at the upcoming Canadian Fighting Championship feb.6 at the wpg convention center.

Peguis band member Arthur Cook will be boxing for the Canadian Heavyweight Championship belt March 20th. Cook, 30, is the former WBC Youth World Champion and is a veteran of more than 20 pro fights and is 1-0 (1) in MMA. I will update his training progress next article
this section will cover alot players and fighters  of native, metis, and manitoba heritage from across canada playing minor pro, junior, and university hockey. As well as fighters where ever they are fighting. there will be player of the month selections for junior hockey. As well as three fighter of the month selections.

Ryan Constant and Trent Cambell have both been playing well and were promoted to AHL teams recently, later returning to their ECHL clubs. Kajan Mckay, younger brother of former OCN Blizzard star Konrad Mckay is in his rookie year with the Portage Terriors.  Kajan has 5 goals and 8 assists and 63 pelanty minutes in 40 games played. Kajan has a bright future as a 16 year old rookie on on of the best junior teams in canada. Portage is one point behind 1st place Winnipeg Saints. Portage is tied for 1st in regular season wins with 38 wins in 49 games with the Winnipeg Saints who have one more game played with 50. Older brother Konrad Mckay recently returned to the quebec based LNAH hockey league. In 6  games with Trois Rivieres Konrad has 1 goal 6 assists for 7 points in 6 games played, along with 14 pelanty minutes.Konrad is a well decorated minor league veteran since graduating from the OCN Bliazzard ranks moving onto and enjoying one of the most succussful hockey careers in the organizations history . Ryan Person has also decided to come out of retirement, again. Like Sasquatch, Person heads south in the winter to warmer climates. I was at the last retirement party along with former teammate Geoff Rollins. Person and Rollins are playing for Brain Goudie,The Pas, head coach of the Richmond Renegades. Person has 1 win in 5 games played. I will be covering their playoff drive. This is Person's 8th season professional and the former championship goaltender for the OCN Blizzard is looking to get back into playoff form and back to winning ways. Last season Person and I were teammates when we lost in the league finals to the Knoxville Icebears. Robin Big snake is also considering returning to pro as well.
Don "Chop" Melnyck is trying to get his  5th place twin city cylcones into the playoffs contention  Chop has a point a game average, is leading his team in scoring and plays alot of time in special team situations. He is also the front runner for this year's "Lady Byng" award with a soft 10 minutes in pelanties. Giving him a run for his money is Russell Spence with a just as fluffy 8 pelanty minutes but in less games so far. There will also be a "Power Foward Award", Rick Kozak and Colt King are both putting the puck in the net and racking up some time in the box as well. I'll add Ryan Constant to this category as well even though he is defence but plays a physical game has been dropping the gloves more this season. There will also be a "I'm So Tough I Don't Need Points" award as well. Looks like Jon Mirasty and Robin Richards are neck and neck going into the playoff stretch tied with no points each. but Kalin Paul and Dan Leslie are still in the picture with 3 points each. The Green Jacket Award will be awarded to the player that has the most goals scored while he is on the ice, leading the way, and his team to the golf course.

In university hockey notes, the manitoba bisons womens hockey team is having an outstanding season led by metis goaltending. the bisons have a record of 16-0. with only 18 goals against. In the pipes for the university of manitoba bison's is stacey corfield from gilliam manitoba. stacey has some impressive stats with a 1.13 gaa and a 0.944 save percentage. stacey's backup is 18 year old alix fenner from the pas manitoba. in manitoba uniersity mens hockey. terrance delaronde, winnipeg/skownan, is back from an ankle injury and helped the bison's to two victories over the weekend picking up an assist. terrance looks to get back into the bison's top lines and put up some more points with playoffs around the corner. last season tearrance played 70 games for the moose jaw warriors, he had 17 goals 20 assists 37 points and 117 pelanty minutes. In 14gp with the bisons , terrance has 3 assists in 14 games played. check the university of manitoba website for team schedules at www.umanitoba.ca.

other manitoba hockey players doing some fighting in the minors. are robin richards, from winnipeg.  with the Alaska Aces in the ECHL , Dan Leslie from Portage la Prairie is playing with the cloumbus cottonmouths and brett needham from the pas, was traded from richmond to fayetteville. By needhams count, he is 10-0 this year so far but dan leslie is leading the league in pelanty minutes. so the sphl heavyweight belt is up in the air to be determined down the stretch,  but likely staying in  manitoba ands anyway. chris stranger has a amatuer mma fight card upcoming in peguis as well. stranger runs bears den gym in peguis and represented it well in las vegas at a world recognized grappling competition. dwight sutherland is expected to make a return to the cage soon as well. codey hanna is in shape these days and on a championship mission. james wayka lost fight in mexicali show vs jose lois castillo.kelly page, andy gardner are both competing the nationals in quebec.hazen chessie, walter favel, rodman batson.rocky zuniga, reese sette, brothers josh and garrett mcpherson, aaron cochrane, are all amatuer fighters i will bring you updates on. 'Nasty' is having an entertaining year in syracuse, many fans say the most exciting fighting style in all hockey, www. jon mirasty .com, he's like the native equivilent to kimbo slice of youtube, made his nhl preseason debut this year with the columbus blue jackets, dangerous dave zuniga is one of the only canadians to fight and win in Bangkok Thailand's Ratchademnern Stadium. he will be back in winnipeg feb 6th at the convention center  fighting on the Canadian Fighting Championship feb.6 at the wpg convention center against Douglas edwards from Kansas city. The 17th annual Native Hockey League Falcons Cup was in Ashcroft B.C, in the heart on Shuswap Country, in the Thomson River Valley. It was beautiful to be back there, spent the best year of my career in Kamloops nine years ago with the Blazers. I arrived friday afternoon ready to play some hockey. My gear arrived Saturday so i started the tourny off in true rez hockey fashion with a borrowed set of gear.
It was a prison rules style tournement. hitting slashing, tripping were all allowed. Williams Lake was a good passing team that would do good in a senior league, but so were the team that won it, the big and physical Ashcroft Cowboys. "It was a good tourney , both the oldtimers and Mens Final went to Overtime!!! Vernon Thunderbirds won the oldtimer division 4-3 over Canim Lake and Esket Wolfpack finished third. In the mens final Ashcroft Cowboys beat Arrows Sports Club 6-5 and Chase Blades came third". said tournemnet organizer james english-grant.Shane Minniabarriet who got the overtime game winner for the Ashcroft Cowboys. Shane was on the recieving end of the Bad to the Bone Saturday night special but he is a big tough logger and put up an entertaining fight for the local crowd. cause i didnt get to the A side, but i went down fighting.  I played for the Kamloops Indian Band Falcons, we lost in the B side final to the Chase Thunderbirds. teams participating were vernon , ashcroft, kamloops, merritt, williams lake chase and canim lake.
DOTC is right around the corner and i havent played in there since i was recovering from knee injury 3 years ago, we lost in the a side final with Don Burnstick's Redskins team. This year i'm healthy and i was looking  looking through my people to fight list, and i see that Ryan Braun still owes me 400 dollars from a pair a skates a couple years back, where's my money Braun? wanna get stretched out? huh? im gonna make jam come out your nose.  Results of DOTC days in next issue.

Nahc is fast approaching and volunteer, sponsorship and advertising oppurtunities are available.call (204) 943 8532, or visit www.nahc2009.com. next issue i will  be including more manitoba players and fighters. thanks for reading.
