Boneyard Sports

The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships showcases the best 15-17 year old male and female players from across all thirteen provinces and territories. This year participants of First Nations, Inuit and Métis descent gathered in Ottawa May 3rd to the 8th. The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships has seen the likes of Jordan Tootoo and Carey Price graduate to the NHL, members of the Canadian National Team and many more to the Major Junior and Junior A ranks.

This year Team Saskatchewan were repeat champions in the male division taking it to Team Manitoba 8-1 in the championship game. Team Saskatchewan went 6-0 with one tie in the tournament. Team Eastern Door North defeated Ontario North for third place by a score of 10 to 7. Team Eastern Door’s Brett Hester led the tournament in scoring with 8 goals and 13 assists for 21 points in 7 games played. Saskatchewan teammates Bryce Gervais and Taylor Fauchoux were tied for second in scoring with 18 points. Team Manitoba's Shane McPherson led goaltenders with 5 wins including 1 shutout and posting a 3.21 goals against average.

In the women’s division team Manitoba went 6-0 in tournament play and beat Team Ontario South 5-3 in the final. Team Manitoba was led by Under-18 Team Canada National team member Bridgette Laquette who recently won gold in Chicago at the 2010 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship. Jamie Lee Rattray of Team Ontario South scored 15 goals and added 4 assists for a tournament leading 19 points in 6 games played. Chantel Lyschynski lead goaltenders with a 4-0 record and only allowing 4 goals in as many games
