the 2009 national aboriginal championships are fast approaching and wheels are in motion for this years championship to be the among the best events native winnipeg ever put together. I asked Daryl Bauer , general manager for the 2009 NAHC for some information but he has to ask Gord Petruic, assistant GM NAHC whats really happening, So Gord sent me some articles. Team Manitoba is expected to ice a strong team with championship expectations, the final cuts will be made soon with final camp being held at the maxbell arena starting december 26th. A skills competion is also being considered and in the works with minor league players and WHL players commited to help the competion run well.
The skills competition will feature a fastest lap race, hardest shot competion, obsticle course race, as well as shoot out.The reasoning behind introducing a skills competion to this year NAHC is to give scouts an opportunity to see elements of the game that are important in todays new NHL. With the NHLPA helping out and donating hockey equipment to every team participating,and Legends like Reggie Leach and Gino Odjick along with Current NHL stars on board, this tournement is set to be a once in a lifetime experience for particapants as well as all involved in organizing and watching this event.
Indian hockey tournement season is also underway and weekend warriors from every reserve are taping sticks, skipping work, and trying get team sponsership. The winners of the first tornement of the season held in Shoal Lake First Nation, Ontario, was a 8 man team of usual guns called the Ogema's that consisted of rez hockey stars and brothers, Nick, J.J, and ivan roulette, also doing thier part were Nathan 'Wog' Landon, jason smith, Dave redsky with Ken Henry in the pipes. Ivan roulette lead the way with 14 goals.I'm also set to play in my first tournment this boxing day weekend in saddle lake or sarcee, alberta,december 27th and 28th.
